Tie Bars & Tie Clips: Functional Fashion Accessories for Men
Tie bars and tie clips are both necktie accessories for men that have been around since the beginning of the 20th century. It reached the height of its popularity during the development of corporations, and was worn by anyone who wears ties like executives, company workers, managers, and such. The main purpose of both tie bar and tie clip is to keep the tie in place. The only difference between them is how they are placed in the tie. A tie bar is simply slid into the tie and shirt, while a tie clip is clipped on. When the tails of the tie are attached to the shirt, you don't have to worry about your ties flapping around when it's windy.
During the 70s and 80s, the use of tie clips and tie bars declined. This is the period when fashion took a turn and became more flamboyant. There were then fewer men wearing suits and ties. However, they returned to the fashion scene in the recent years, but are now used for more than just their practical function. Tie bars and tie clips are now considered as part of the fashion statement among men. It gives a certain air of elegance and professionalism without being too glaring.
Do's And Don'ts Of Wearing Tie Bars & Tie Clips
Using a tie bar or clip is pretty easy. You just basically sandwich the two ends of the tie and the shirtfront in between the U-shaped tie clip or bar. However, a lot of guys are doing it wrong. Here are a few rules to follow.
The ideal position for your tie bar or clip is somewhere in between the 3rd and 4th buttons of the shirt. Another thing to consider is the width of the clip or bar. The general rule is that it should cover 3/4 of the tie width. Never wear a tie clip or bar that is longer than the width of the tie because it would look like you’re wearing a pen instead. A clip or bar that's too short wouldn't be able to hold the tie and shirt together.
Finding The Tie Bar & Tie Clip For You
Since the comeback of tie clips and bars, there have been different designs, sizes, shapes and materials to choose from. How would you know which one to use?
The first thing to consider is the type of tie you are wearing. If it's a skinny tie, then use a smaller clip or bar, and use the longer ones for wider ties. The material and thickness of your tie is a factor, too. You can use the tie clip for sturdy materials but use a tie bar for delicate ones to prevent damaging them.
Lastly, choose the shape and design that fit your personal style. You could go for the classic look using plain gold or silver tie clip or bar. You can use clips and bars that have unique designs and even match them with your cufflinks.
